Work/Games/Spike

Spike

Spike is an action adventure game in isometric 3D in which you play as a hedgehog using their spikes as a weapon.

GENRE: Action/adventure, Solo
GAME ENGINE: Unity
TEAM SIZE: 13
DEV TIME: Sept 2022 - Feb 2023
PLATFORM: PC

CONTEXT

Spike was developed in the context of my diploma for my master's degree in Game Design at l'École Nationale du jeu et des médias interactifs numériques (CNAM - ENJMIN).

The project is born from a love of hardcore experiences and wanting to experiment with the balancing of difficult but fair encounters (and how cute hedgehogs are). It was developed during five months by a core team of ten people working part time.

I worked hand in hand with another game designer during the whole duration of the project, from the pitch to the final presentation.

With my co-game designer we pitched the initial idea to our classmates and managed to form a solid team to go forward with. We built a vertical slice showcasing our smooth character controller, tough encounters and our fantastic art direction and stop motion inspired animation

WHAT I DID ON THE PROJECT

Game Design

  • Core mechanics design using a holistic and rational approach

  • 3Cs design and calibration with an iterative process

  • Game Feel design and prototyping

  • Enemy & Combat Design

Level Design

  • Macro level design and pacing

  • Environmental level design in engine

Team Management & Leadership

  • Ensure the cohesion of the team vision

  • Close work with the producer to help the team plan out their tasks and follow the progress of the project

MORE DETAILS

We first pitched the project to our teachers who then chose a selection of games to be presented to our classmates.

This exercice put to test our communication skills as we needed to communicate our ideas to people of several different specialties.

It was also important to know when to stop so people would have the space to project their vision on our pitch and therefore grow the project furter.
